THE MOST POPULAR DIVE KAYAKS ARE FROM

I DO NOT WORK FOR OCEAN KAYAK, INC!!! ---Mark Theobald

With that said, you will still notice that I am quite biased toward their products. Over the years the Ocean Kayak, Inc. models have proven themselves again and again in every arena and qualification - durability, stability, tracking, weight, comfort, price, versatility, and speed, to name most but not all. You may have noticed also that Ocean Kayak models are the choice of nearly all the other divers who appear in my web site and my book - it's not by coincindence!

This page features photos of, and OK's own brochure material for, all their divable models. I have added my own Review at the bottom of each section.

Ocean Kayak, Inc. would like you to note:
The Max Capacity listed for each model may vary depending on water conditions!

The SRP (Suggested Retail Price) may or may not inlcude freight and is US Domestic price only.
International prices vary. Contact Ocean Kayak, Inc. for more information.

Most models come in these colors:
Yellow, blue, lime, turquoise, raspberry, white, granite, red, kelly green, and olive drab.

Mark's Review:
So much fun in the surf that if you only want to freedive very near shore then I say "go for it".

The YakBoard is not a high peroformance wave ski, and, for the larger paddler in particular, it is a slow paddler. But... It is a a rocket on a wave for any size paddler. The YakBoard is stable and forgiving, and features a keel design which quickly gives it lots of forward speed in the surf allowing plenty of great S-Turns, Cutbacks, and 180s. Did I tell you it carves waves like butter?! 360 degree flat-spins are a little tougher but it can be rolled in the surf if you stay in those knee-straps!

Here is my review of the Yak Board I posted on Paddling.Net:
It's really not fair to only be able to give this boat one rating... For fun, stability, user friendliness, and newbie forgiveness, it is a 10. For performance in surf it is an 8, and that's only because I have had the opportunity to try the very few sit-on-tops that surpass it in performance, although at a great cost of MUCH less stability. I have rolled mine more than a half dozen times in up to 10 foot surf (knee-straps required) and came back up quick enough to stay on the wave. It carves surf like butter and has GREAT forward tracking which quickly gives it a LOT of forward speed for cutting waves with. Although it is a rocket on a wave front, the speed and sluggishness of this kayak when NOT on a wave is the only factor that, for me and my nearly 200 pound weight, brings the overall score down to an 8! Even at my size and weight I still have an absolute blast with it. Kids really love this boat and these lighter paddlers find it fast enough and VERY, VERY easy to learn to surf.

FRENZY

The Frenzy is one of the easiest, most user-friendly kayaks available. By combining a built-in keel with short length, the Frenzy can track straight yet maintain incredible maneuverability. Designed to nest on top of each other, two or three Frenzys can be stored in a garage, cabin, or backyard. And because the Frenzy is so affordable, the whole family can join in.

Water Types: Flat water (bays, estuaries, lakes, and ponds), moderate ocean swells or waves, and slow-moving rivers.

Applications: Surfing, day play, nature watching, exploring, fishing, diving, and fitness.

Features: Open cockpit; molded-in seat well and foot wells; self-bailing scupper holes; bow storage; bow and stern carrying handles; threaded drain plug; multiple accessory eyelets; bow spray deflector; adjustable gear straps; durable, linear polyethylene construction with molded-in graphics; and storability (the unique hull design allows one to nest up to three Frenzys high).

Optional: One round, screw-in, 6" center hatch; dive graphics (available only in natural, lime, and yellow kayak colors).

Specifications:
Length: 9'/2.74 m
Width: 30"/76.20 cm
Cockpit Length: 61.5"/125.10 cm
Weight: 45 lbs/20.41 kg
Max. Weight Capacity: 275-325 lbs/125-147.72 kg
SRP: $399-449 USD depending on options.

Mark's Review:
Two 180 pound divers in our group take 2 tanks out on these regularly - it has a huge cargo capacity for its size! On the slow side for long distance, but tons of fun in the surf and very stable and forgiving. This is the perfect first boat for adventurous kids that will last them many years! Possible center hatch but few ever install it.

SCRAMBLER

Where do you want to paddle? From lakes, to surf, to slower rivers, the Scrambler can take you there. Whether you want to fish, dive, or cruise, the dimensions and design of the Scrambler make it great for virtually any water activity you can imagine. First-time paddlers can feel like experts in this kayak, which is why the Scrambler is Ocean Kayak's best selling single.

Water Types: Flat water (bays, estuaries, lakes, and ponds), moderate ocean swells or waves, and slow-moving rivers.

Applications: Diving, fishing, day play, nature watching, exploring, fitness, light touring, surfing, and flat water cruising.

Features: Open cockpit; molded-in tank well/ice chest holder; molded-in seat well and foot wells; tri-form hull design; V-molded stern; self-bailing scupper holes; bow and stern carrying handles; threaded drain plug; multiple accessory eyelets; bow spray deflector; adjustable gear straps; durable, linear polyethylene construction with molded-in graphics; and storability (the unique hull design allows one to nest up to three Scramblers high).

Optional: Up to two round, 8" Gaspachi hatches (bow and/or center).

Specifications:

Max. Weight Capacity: 275-325 lbs/125-147.72 kg
SRP: $499-579 USD depending on options.

Mark's Review:
The Scrambler fits between the Frenzy and XT for paddling distance and perhaps surfability. It is a little narrower all around than the XT and sits you higher out of the water, making it not as stable as the XT, or the Frenzy for that matter. Great for divers under 150 pounds - any heavier than that and I would skip up to the XT! Put the front hatch in first if you are heavy.

SCRAMBLER XT

If you like the Scrambler but you're looking for a little more in a kayak, check out the Scrambler XT. Paddlers with larger body types are more comfortable with the XT's added length and width. Plus, its lower center of gravity makes the Scrambler XT an especially stable platform--a great feature for both fishing and diving.

Water Types: Flat water (bays, estuaries, lakes, and ponds), moderate ocean swells or waves, and slow-moving rivers.

Applications: Diving, fishing, day play, nature watching, exploring, fitness, day touring, surfing, and flat water cruising.

Features: Open cockpit; molded-in tank well/ice chest holder; molded-in seat well and foot wells; tri-form hull design; self-bailing scupper holes; bow and stern carrying handles; threaded drain plug; multiple accessory eyelets; bow spray deflector; adjustable gear straps; and durable, linear polyethylene construction with molded-in graphics.

Optional: One oval Gaspachi bow hatch (10" x 18"); and/or one round, 8" Gaspachi center hatch; custom configuration for lifeguards (no hatches, natural-colored kayak with red graphics); dive graphics (available only in natural, lime, and yellow kayak colors).

Specifications:

Cockpit Length: 51"/129.54 cm
Weight: 56 lbs/25.40 kg
Max. Weight Capacity*: 300-350 lbs/136.08-158.76 kg

Mark's Review:
What's NOT to like about the Scrambler XT? Every kayak design compromises on some performance factors in favor of others. For instance, maneuverability for tracking, or stability for speed. I think the XT has averaged out ALL the performance factors to the best possible advantage for the paddler, fisherman, and diver in the 160 to 210 pound range (and much more without dive gear). For price and performance, the XT is simply one of the best choices out there!

From what I've seen, the Scrambler XT is possibly the most popular dive kayak in the world for divers in the weight range I mentioned above. Ample storage, very stable with lots of room in the cockpit, a good medium distance paddler, extremely durable, and a lot of fun in the surf once you master the brace and steering, are just some of the reasons why we love our XTs for diving.

We almost always take two tanks out on our XTs. Most of us stack both tanks in the tank well but one of the gang still prefers to secure his second tank up on the foredeck or between his knees. As with the regular Scrambler, start with the front hatch only, it's all you'll need anyway on the XT!

If you are scubadiving from it and making surf entries and exits, don't forget to add a few more sets of eyelets around the tank well to further secure your expensive gear with bungee cords. This goes for ALL kayaks with a tank well! I also recommend a bungee or two across the front oval hatch to keep your weightbelt from knocking the cover off if you happen to roll in the surf.

When you are done diving, offload your dive gear and take the XT back out to play in the surf. It's great!

SCUPPER PRO

Imagine cutting through the water with speed and ease. The Scupper Pro can do it, taking you the distance with all the extra gear you need for touring or any other adventure. The Pro comes standard with large hatches in the bow and stern which provide ample below-deck storage. A sleek performer, the Scupper Pro does not sacrifice stability for speed; it is a great choice for touring, camping, or fishing.

Water Types: Flat water (bays, estuaries, lakes, and ponds), moderate ocean swells or waves, and slow-moving rivers.

Applications: Touring, fishing, camping, diving, day play, nature watching, fitness, flat water cruising, and surfing.

Features: Open cockpit; molded-in seat well and foot wells; large bow and stern hatches (12" x 22") with hatch straps; self-bailing scupper holes; bow and stern carrying handles; threaded drain plug; multiple accessory eyelets; bow spray deflector; compass mount; and durable, linear polyethylene construction with molded-in graphics.

Optional: Rudder system with adjustable foot pedals; one round, screw-in, 6" center hatch.

Specifications:

Cockpit Length: 52.5"/133.35 cm
Weight: 55 lbs/24.95 kg
Max. Weight Capacity: 350-400 lbs/158.76-181.44 kg
SRP: $749-999 USD depending on options.

Mark's Review:
Ocean Kayak's second longest single-seater (next to the new Manta) makes it their best selling long distance paddler. It features secure, under-deck storage for up to 3 tanks plus anchor and other gear. The ScupperPros are pretty fast on the water even when heavily loaded. They are seaworthy, stable, and track well except in a crosswind. Consider adding the optional rudder if you routinely paddle in windy conditions.

The cockpit is more confining than that of the XT and you'll probably find that an 80 Cu.Ft. tank will only fit into the forward hold with the very trimmest of BCs attached. Surfing ability is nil for the novice, you'll want to come in on the back of the wave.

YakBoard Frenzy Scrambler Scrambler XT Scupper Pro Scupper Pro TW Drifter Manta Malibu II Zest II Cabo

SCUPPER PRO TW

With the same design as the Scupper Pro, the Scupper Pro TW substitutes the stern hatch with a molded-in tank well, which provides both above and below-deck storage. The Scupper Pro TW is a big favorite for fishing and is especially good for scuba divers. (It'll also hold an ice chest if that's more your style.)

Water Types: Flat water (bays, estuaries, lakes, and ponds), moderate ocean swells or waves, and slow-moving rivers.
Applications: Diving, fishing, touring, camping, day play, nature watching, fitness, short- and long-distance paddling, and surfing. Features: Open cockpit; molded-in seat well and foot wells; large, bow hatch (12" x 22") with hatch straps; molded-in tank well; self-bailing scupper holes; bow and stern carrying handles; threaded drain plug; multiple accessory eyelets; adjustable gear straps; bow spray deflector; compass mount; molded-in cup holder and water bottle holder; and durable, linear polyethylene construction with molded- in graphics.
Optional: Rudder system with adjustable foot pedals; one round, screw-in, 6" center hatch; dive graphics (available only in natural, lime, and yellow kayak colors).

Mark's Review:
The ScupperPro TW shakes out just as well as the Pro with the additional feature of allowing a fully configured tank/BC/reg unit of any size to be secured in the rear tank well. Two more 80s will easily fit into the forward hold leaving room for weightbelt, anchor, wetsuit jacket, snorkel gear, etc... Extra weight in the bow will help the leeward helm too!

DRIFTER

Looking for the perfect day-tripping kayak? The Drifter is it! You can keep gear safe stowed below deck in the large bow hatch, or keep gear strapped on deck in the stern tank well for easy access in transit. The stand-out features of the Drifter, though, are the wide beam and seat well. It's our roomiest kayak ever! Not only is the Drifter comfortable, it is extremely stable--perfect for beginners or large paddlers who find narrow kayaks hard to balance. The Drifter is nimble, too. It turns like a champ, and can handle winds or hard current when outfitted with a rudder. If you don't want a 16-footer but you do want the capacity to day tour, the Dirfter is the kayak for you.

Water Types: Flat water (bays, estuaries, lakes, and ponds), moderate ocean swells or waves, and slow-moving rivers.

Applications: Light touring, fishing, diving, day play, nature watching, photography, and fitness.

Features: Bow hatch (12" x 22"); stern tank well; open, self-bailing cockpit; bow and stern carrying handles; side-mount carry handles; adjustable gear straps; molded-in seat well and foot wells; threaded drain plug; multiple accessory eyelets; bow spray deflector; durable, linear polyethylene construction with molded-in graphics.

Optional: Rudder system with adjustable foot pedals.

Mark's Review:
I absolutely LOVE everything about the Drifter!!! Fast, very stable, light, no downwind helm in a cross-wind (very important!), tons of storage under the front hatch, cuts through chop like butter, excellent tracking, cockpit room galore, super comfortable to sit in, etc.... You guys definitely got this one right the first time! It is so fast that I was catching short rides on the 9 inch swell running our way inside the outer jetty!

I guess if you were to FORCE me to say something negative about it I would comment on the fact that you sit in quite a bit more water than in other models due to the fact that the seat pan and deck are lower and closer to the bottom hull on this model. This design feature greatly ENHANCES the stability and sitting comfort of the kayak, and, for touring or anglers that aren't diving and don't want to get that wet, there are always scupper stoppers or duct tape to keep the cockpit dry (assuming no surf entries requiring draining).

I did my first two lobster dives of the 2000 season (both night dives) with the Drifter without making any additions to it and plan to use it most often now. I can't imagine needing a different kayak for diving unless I want to take three tanks out, in which case I might use the Scupper Pro TW. The superb stability and seaworthiness of the Drifter on a choppy, wind-blown, pitch black ocean made for the most comfortable night dive imaginable in such conditions. I now regularly do morning dives with two tanks on the Drifter. I put the second tank in the forward hatch with the greatest of ease, leaving plenty of room for all my other gear, including wetsuit jacket, anchor, fins, etc... The extra weight up front does bury the bow a bit and slows the boat a little, making it about as fast as a Scrambler XT with one tank, however it leaves plenty of waterline to deal with accessing the forward hold and doesn't seem to affect the stability in the slightest. I found a 13 pound anchor on a recent two-tank dive (pictured above) and brought it back in through 4' surf on the Drifter.

Because of great tracking, even in a crosswind, I also can't imagine ever needing a rudder on this boat, however, the rudder mount made for the perfect place to stick my dive flag! I WILL add a few eyelets to further secure the tank in the tank well, to provide two attachemt points for the anchor, and to run a side line for attaching game bags, lights, cameras, etc., however, it was very doable without these additions by making creative use of the existing eyelets.

It looks like the Drifter could be destined to be one of the best kayaks on the market for the bigger diver. They have combined the very best features of their other models and put them on a totally new hull design that is just as wide and slightly longer than the Malibu Two, yet lighter than most kayaks in this size range. I already love the Malibu Two as a great, stable dive platform with a huge cargo capacity even without a tank well and good under-hatch storage. The cockpit of the Drifter is HUGE and the Scupper Pro type forward hatch provides easy access to a whole lot of storage below!

MANTA

Sleek, graceful, and engineered perfectly to glide through the water, the Manta Ray inspires an anxious awe in all who view it. The design of the new Manta by Ocean Kayak evokes the image of its namesake--a fast, beautiful, and totally unique way to tour.

Ocean Kayak paid special attention to the shape of the Manta--at first glance, you'll notice its wing-like bow plane and sculpted hull detailing. Like other Ocean Kayak models, this shaping, though attractive, remains linked to function. The "wings" keep the bow of the kayak from pearling in waves, swells, and wakes to keep you on top of the water and cruising.

Water Types: Flat water (bays, estuaries, lakes, and ponds), moderate ocean swells or waves, and slow moving rivers.

Applications: Touring, fishing, diving, day play, nature watching, fitness, short and long distance paddling.

Features: Bow plane, open cockpit, molded-in seat well and foot wells, large bow and stern 12" x 22" hatches, self-bailing cockpit, bow and stern carrying handles, threaded drain plug, lash down lines, molded-in cup holder, and durable linear polyethylene construction with molded-in graphics.

Optional: Removable coaming to extend your paddling season, rudder system with adjustable foot pedals.

Specifications:
Length: 16' (4.9 m)
Width: 28" (71.2 cm)
Weight: 70 lbs. (31.8 kg)
Max. Weight Capacity: 400-450 lbs. (181.4-204.1 kg)
SRP: $799-$1049 USD depending on options.

Mark's Review:
The Manta is long and sleek and the "Manta wings" (bow planes) are only large enough to provide the desired functionality without being too obtrusive - and, YES, they do work! There is an inordinate amount of storage below the front and rear Scupper Pro type hatches. I'm sure you could put all your scuba gear and a weeks worth of camping gear below with ease! I was even able to get my fully outfitted tank/bc/reg unit into the rear hatch, although I did have to tuck the hoses and console in a bit to make it easier.

The Manta is as fast as it looks... I was moving along more than 10 feet with each light paddle stroke I made! I took the Manta out around the outer jetty at Channel Islands Harbor on a rough and windy day. The nearly three foot chop slowed the boat considerably but I felt so comfortable with the seaworthiness of the boat that it didn't bother me at all to be out there in only shorts and a T-shirt in 62 degree water temperature. I was also glad to note that the Manta did not exhibit a leeward helm characteristic (bow blowing downwind in a crosswind) that I have seen in so many other longer kayaks.

I turned the Manta toward the beach and tried my hand at catching about a dozen small waves with it. OK, so it is too long to actually make any maneuvers on the wave front, but, it is the first kayak I ever surfed on which you could catch even a small wave LONG before it ever crested or broke. The Manta "wings" helped to keep the pointed bow from diving and the Manta handled much better than expected in a broach (washing in sideways on the wave).

Did I mention how stable this kayak is? I think I leaned this kayak over farther than any other kayak to date without feeling like it was going to go over on me! Also, this kayak simply feels sturdy and durable. OK, so that is probably due to the 70+ pounds it weighs, but it is still impressive. I'm looking forward to getting a coaming for mine and trying sit-inside winter paddling for the first time!

Note: I would have subtracted a point for two possible reasons: It is on the heavy side for a single-seater, and the hatches are not as easy to access as a scuba diver as, say, the Scupper Pro, But...., there is just too much else I like about it, especially for the larger paddler. The weight isn't that bad for the 16 foot length of the Manta and the speed is excellent!. And, even though you have to reach for them, those hatches cover more cargo space than any diver is likely to ever need, so I have to give it a solid 10!

MALIBU TWO

Versatility and stability have made the Malibu Two Ocean Kayak's most popular model and probably the most recognized sit-on-top in the world. Three molded-in seat wells make it easy for solo or tandem paddling. You can even take on a third passenger (depending on total weight), which makes it perfect for paddling as a family. If you're looking for an affordable, versatile, stable kayak, you'll find it in the Malibu Two.

Water Types: Flat water (bays, estuaries, lakes, and ponds), moderate ocean swells or waves, and slow-moving rivers.

Applications: Day play, fishing, diving, exploring, nature watching, fitness, light touring, and surfing.

Features: Open cockpit; three molded-in seat wells; molded-in foot wells; tri-form hull design; self-bailing scupper holes; bow and stern carrying handles; threaded drain plug; multiple accessory eyelets; bow spray deflector; adjustable gear straps; and durable, linear polyethylene construction with molded-in graphics.

Mark's Review:
The Malibu Two is Ocean Kayak's most popular 2-passenger kayak, in fact, the Malibu Two is the most popular kayak in the world. It is so durable, stable, and so much fun to paddle and surf that it is the best selling kayak in the rental business, especially in high use resort areas.

The Malibu Two was not particularly designed from the start as a dive platform but is easily tranformed into a great dive kayak for the larger diver with the addition of sufficient eyelets, bungies, and tethers for securing all your gear.

This kayak is more fun than should be legal in the surf! I've had it out in 8' surf paddling tandem and a few times in 7' surf as a solo paddler. Either way it is absolutely a blast to paddle and surf! Sitting solo in the rear-most seat position, you can take a sideways hit from just about any wave and recover to make several S-Turns on the face. About the only trick you need to know to surf the M2 is to never lean the boat. Stay seated upright with the kayak level in all situations and you will be surprised at what you can do with it!

The Zest Two has been spotted at hundreds of resorts around the world. This popular tandem can carry up to 600 pounds and features a molded-in double tank well/ice chest holder. With its speed, superior tracking, and maneuverability, it's no wonder why so many paddlers who initially rent a Zest eventually go out and buy one of their own.

Water Types: Flat water (bays, estuaries, lakes, and ponds), moderate ocean swells, and slow-moving rivers.

Applications: Diving, fishing, day trips, exploring, nature watching, light touring, fitness, and flat water cruising.

Features: Open cockpit; two molded-in seat wells; molded-in foot wells; bow and stern molded-in tank wells/ice chest holders; self-bailing scupper holes; bow and stern carrying handles; threaded drain plug; multiple accessory eyelets; adjustable gear straps; bow spray deflector; and durable, linear polyethylene construction with molded-in graphics.

Take a Scrambler, stretch it out to 16 feet and make it a bit fatter, add a second seat, and you have Ocean Kayak's 2-diver model. Mark's Review:
This is probably the fastest tandem dive kayak available that is well geared for taking two fully outfitted scuba divers out to their offshore dive site. The speed of this kayak generates a lot of excitement at kayak clinics. It features a large under-hatch storage area at the bow and convenient tank storage areas in front of each paddler. I still have to try putting four tanks on and in the Cabo.

The 16'3" Cabo is faster than the Zest Two at the expense of less stability than it's 16 foot older brother. Like the Zest Two, it's a lot of boat to handle out of the water, especially by yourself, but excels once out on the water.
